All The President’s Women

Review of She Said written by Rebecca Lenkiewicz and directed by Maria Schrader
Rating *****

In 1976, Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford made investigative reporters look cool when they appeared in the movie All The President’s Men. The film, and the book it was based on, tells the story of how two reporters blew the lid off of Nixon’s attempted coverup of Watergate.

You might not know the names Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan, but they played reporters equally as important as Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. The two New York Times reporters at the center of this story are Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor. Their reporting into sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein led to a book and film titled She Said.

The film She Said made some news recently as a box office bomb due to its poor opening. That’s unfortunate. We need more movies like this. I saw an afternoon show in a theatre with three other people. Despite many scenes involving phone calls, text messages, and computer screens, I’m glad I saw it on the big screen. You don’t have to have explosions or gunfights to tell a compelling story.

Weinstein’s fall was at the front end of a long list of powerful men whose career’s took a nose dive after they were exposed for sexual misconduct. Weinstein, however, is in a class all his own. He spent more time trying to use his influence to coerce women into sex than he did making movies.

See this one while it’s still in theaters. I have a feeling it won’t be available much longer. They need to make room for the next superhero movie.
