About sixty percent of the books I choose to read I learn about through reviews. Unfortunately, that means I miss a lot of great books. As it is now, only a small portion of the books published get reviewed. With newspapers and magazines reducing or cutting their book sections, there is even less chance for readers to learn about new books. That’s where the bookstore comes in. The other forty percent of the books I read I discover by browsing my local bookstore.
My book 35 Miles From Shore: The Ditching and Rescue of ALM Flight 980 is a finalist in the Redaerviews.com 2008 literary awards competition. My book was nominated in the Nonfiction/History category. Click here for a complete listing of the finalists.
Man on Wire tells the story of Philippe Petit and his successful wire-walking attempt across the two World Trade Center towers on August 7, 1974. The film uses a combination of archival footage and photos, recreations, and interviews with Philippe and his co-conspirators. I say co-conspirators because the crossing required some subterfuge among a number of individuals.
I’ve finally had a chance to see all five Oscar nominated films. I’ve read elsewhere that some are saying that there are some weak contenders this year. While that has been in true in years past (Brokeback Mountain, There Will be Blood), my take is totally opposite. I think all five films are strong.
This is a great documentary. Just about everyone can find something or someone who they can identify with. I haven’t been to highschool in a few years, okay a few decades, but some things never change. And what’s true in highschool is also true out in the real world. The same personality traits developed in highschool can be found in any business environment.
